BID funds are used to pay for supplemental services such as street sweeping and public-space improvements. BID staff also work to market the district and support local entrepreneurship.

Sanitation

The BID has a sanitation contract with The Doe Fund, a non-profit organization that helps transition formerly homeless individuals to full-time employment and self-supported housing.

The Doe Fund's Ready, Willing & Able program provides two uniformed street cleaning personnel from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, with extended hours in the summer. Workers sweep sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; clear drains and shovel snow from corners; and empty trash receptacles in the BID area.

Street Furniture

Installation of Montague Street's decorative street poles, in the 'bishop's crook' style, was funded through a grant obtained by the BID. Matching black rubbish bins are also provided and maintained by the BID.

Landscaping & Beutification

In addition to planting the BID's street pole flower baskets with vines and colorful annuals, the BID also maintains the district's 65 street trees. We install winter greenery during the holiday season, and in 2007 the BID launched a program of festive holiday lighting. The district's lampposts are also adorned year-round with colorful seasonal banners, designed by Brooklyn artists.

Marketing & Development

The BID promotes the district through programs and publications produced by organizations such as the NYC Department of Small Business Services. We also support a range of special events, from holiday caroling to summer festivals.

Policy & Governance Outreach

The BID acts as an advocate for local businesses by reaching out to elected officials and City agencies on topics such as zoning, urban design, and property-tax policy.
